Navigating MOTUS Registration and FMCSA Compliance Requirements

As the transportation industry evolves, staying on top of regulatory changes is crucial to keeping your business running smoothly. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) recently released Motus, a modernized USDOT registration system.

To help you stay compliant and avoid disruptions, the team here at All About Trucks in Elgin, IL, has compiled this Q&A guide to break down everything you need to know about Motus.

What is Motus?

Motus is the FMCSA’s newly modernized registration system, designed to replace older, outdated legacy systems. It acts as a centralized “home base” where the commercial motor vehicle community can apply for new USDOT Numbers or operating authority, manage current registrations, submit biennial updates, and securely control authorized access to company accounts.

Who is required to register for a Motus account?

Any entity that requires a USDOT Number and/or operating authority must use Motus. As of May 2026, Motus registration is required for all carriers and brokers. This requirement also extends to freight forwarders, intermodal equipment providers, cargo tank facilities, and supporting businesses like BOC-3 filers and insurance companies.

Is there a strict deadline to complete my Motus registration?

While there is currently no hard deadline to set up your account, you must be mindful of your timeline. Carriers are required to have an active Motus account to comply with their MCS-150 updates promptly. If your biennial update is approaching, it is highly recommended that you start the Motus setup process right away.

How do I get started with Motus?

Setting up your account generally follows a three-step process:

  1. Create a User profile: The very first registration step must be completed by a company official. You will need to create a profile via Login.gov and complete an identity verification process to protect your data.
  2. Create or Claim a Company Account: If you are an existing registrant with a USDOT Number, the company official can “claim” the existing record to import your company data. You should use the same Login.gov email that was used as the company official in the previous FMCSA Portal.
  3. Manage Registrations: Once your account is claimed and active, you can submit updates, manage business information, and track the status of your registrations.

What are the common roadblocks users face during registration?

The registration process can be lengthy and slightly difficult to navigate. Many users have encountered a few specific roadblocks:

  • Facial Recognition Verification: To verify the company official’s identity, the system requires facial recognition. This process can be problematic for some, as it often requires using a phone or tablet to upload a face scan into the system.
  • Linking DOT Numbers: Even after successful identity verification, some company officials hit a roadblock when trying to link their existing DOT number to their new Motus account.
  • Slow Support Response Times: When the system generates an error, users must contact the FMCSA directly via email or chat for further instructions. Response times from the FMCSA can be lengthy, sometimes taking a week or more.
